Automated rat blood sampling has become standard practice in busy pharmacokinetics research departments around the world. Automated sampling uses one fluid channel, from catheter to the sampling machine (watch a video demonstration). Administering an IV dose on a second catheter connected to a two-channel Vascular Access Button™ can be done several ways: (1) a manual bolus into the VAB™ port prior to connecting the animal to the sampling tether; (2) a manual bolus into a port at the top of tether; or (3) as shown here, a syringe pump connected to a second continuous channel.
Instech’s ABS2 software can control and monitor a Harvard Apparatus model 11 Elite pump through a USB connection so that the dose timing is perfectly synchronized with the sample timing.
